Beta-carotene is a naturally occurring carotenoid pigment and the principal provitamin A, supplied by Nustras as a powder and used both as a source of vitamin A activity and as an orange-yellow colourant for supplements, foods and beverages. It is a fat-soluble hydrocarbon carotenoid that the body can convert to retinol; it is listed as food colour E160a.
It is formulated into multivitamin and antioxidant-category supplements in capsule, tablet and softgel form, vitamin premixes, fortified foods, beverages and confectionery as a colourant, and into cosmetic preparations. Beadlet grades suit tablets and beverages, oil suspensions suit softgels.
The active is a red to orange crystalline substance; CAS number 7235-40-7, molecular formula C40H56, molecular weight 536.9. Beta-carotene content is confirmed by HPLC or UV-visible spectrophotometry, identity by its absorption spectrum, and the material is standardised to specification. Heavy-metal and microbial limits are supplied to specification and confirmed on each lot's certificate of analysis.
Nustras supplies beta-carotene in bulk commercial quantities, in sealed light-protected packaging and fibre drums, to manufacturers and formulators internationally, with a certificate of analysis, specification sheet and country-of-origin documentation on every lot. Beta-carotene is an accepted food colour and supplement ingredient in major markets; buyers confirm the vitamin A equivalence, grade and permitted level for their application.
