Selenomethionine

Selenomethionine (L-selenomethionine, SeMet) is a selenium-containing amino acid in which a selenium atom replaces the sulphur of methionine, supplied by Nustras as a white to off-white crystalline powder and used as an organic source of the trace mineral selenium. Selenium is an essential trace element and a constituent of selenoproteins.

It is formulated into mineral and multivitamin-mineral supplements in capsule, tablet and powder form, trace-mineral premixes, fortified foods and beverages, and animal-feed and pet-food premixes. Because of its high selenium content it is commonly blended into a standardised dilution before dosing.

The material is a crystalline powder; CAS 1464-42-2, molecular formula C5H11NO2Se, molecular weight 196.12. Assay, specific rotation, loss on drying and residue on ignition are standardised to specification; identity is confirmed by infrared spectrum and HPLC, selenium content by ICP or atomic absorption, and heavy-metal and microbial limits are supplied to specification and confirmed on each lot's certificate of analysis.
