Magnesium Malate

Magnesium malate is the magnesium salt of malic acid, supplied by Nustras as a white powder and as a directly granulated grade, and used as a source of the mineral magnesium in supplements, fortified foods and beverages. Malic acid is a naturally occurring dicarboxylic acid found in apples and other fruit; its magnesium salt is a stable, mildly acidic compound with good solubility in water.

It is formulated into magnesium supplements in tablet, capsule and powder form, into sports-nutrition and electrolyte powders and drinks, into multimineral premixes, and into fortified beverages and functional foods where a soluble magnesium source with a clean taste is required. The granular grade is intended for direct compression.

The material is a white to almost white powder or granule. CAS number 869-06-7, molecular formula C4H4MgO5, molecular weight 156.38. Magnesium content, malic acid content, loss on drying and pH are standardised to specification; identity and assay are confirmed by complexometric titration, and heavy-metal and microbial limits are supplied to specification and confirmed on each lot's certificate of analysis.
