Ferrous Gluconate

Ferrous gluconate is the salt of divalent iron and gluconic acid, the acid obtained by oxidising glucose. Nustras supplies it as a powder for use as an iron source in dietary supplements and fortified foods and as a colour stabiliser in food processing.

It is formulated into iron tablets, capsules and liquid supplements; into multi-mineral and prenatal products; into fortified cereals, beverages and nutritional powders; and into feed premixes.

Ferrous gluconate is supplied as a yellowish-grey to pale greenish-yellow powder or granule with a faint caramel-like odour (CAS 299-29-6, molecular formula C12H22FeO14, molecular weight 446.14). Iron content, ferric iron, reducing sugars and loss on drying are standardised to specification; identity is confirmed by iron and gluconate tests and assay by cerimetric titration. Heavy-metal and microbial limits are supplied to specification and confirmed on each lot's certificate of analysis.
