Ferrous Fumarate

Ferrous fumarate is the iron(II) salt of fumaric acid, supplied by Nustras as a powder, a micronised grade and a direct-compression granular grade, and one of the most widely used sources of the mineral iron for supplements, fortification and pharmaceutical applications. Iron is an essential trace element; the fumarate salt is practically insoluble in water and bland in taste.

Ferrous fumarate is formulated into iron and multimineral supplements in tablets, capsules and powders, into prenatal and multivitamin-mineral products, into nutritional premixes, and into fortified flour, cereals and other staple foods where iron fortification is practised.

The material is a reddish-orange to red-brown powder. CAS number 141-01-5, molecular formula C4H2FeO4, molecular weight 169.90. Iron(II) is assayed by redox titration with the ferric-iron fraction limited to specification; identity is confirmed by infrared spectroscopy. Heavy-metal and microbial limits are supplied to specification and confirmed on each lot's certificate of analysis.
