Ferric Pyrophosphate

Ferric pyrophosphate is an inorganic salt of trivalent iron and pyrophosphoric acid. Nustras supplies it as a fine, pale powder used as an iron source for food fortification and dietary supplements. It is practically insoluble in water and has little taste or colour of its own.

It is formulated into fortified flours, rice, cereals and infant and follow-on formulas where regulations allow; into nutritional powders, meal replacements and beverages; into iron and multi-mineral tablets, capsules and chewables; and into premixes for fortification programmes.

Ferric pyrophosphate is supplied as a yellowish-white to tan, odourless powder (CAS 10058-44-3, molecular formula Fe4O21P6, molecular weight 745.21). Iron content, particle size and loss on ignition are standardised to specification; identity is confirmed by iron and pyrophosphate tests and iron content by titration or ICP. Heavy-metal and microbial limits are supplied to specification and confirmed on each lot's certificate of analysis.
