Xylitol is a five-carbon sugar alcohol (polyol), the reduced form of the pentose sugar xylose, produced commercially by hydrogenation of xylose obtained from hardwood or corn-cob hemicellulose, supplied by Nustras as a white crystalline powder or granule for use as a bulk sweetener. It has a sweetness close to that of sucrose and a pronounced cooling effect on dissolution.
Xylitol is formulated into chewing gum, sugar-free confectionery and chocolate, bakery products, oral-care products, and into chewable tablets and lozenges in the supplement and pharmaceutical sectors, as both sweetener and excipient.
The material is a white crystalline powder or granule, freely soluble in water. CAS 488-81-3, molecular formula C5H12O5, molecular weight 152.15. Assay, melting range, loss on drying, reducing sugars and particle size are standardised to specification in USP/NF and FCC grades; identity is confirmed by infrared spectroscopy and high-performance liquid chromatography, and heavy-metal and microbial limits are supplied to specification and confirmed on each lot's certificate of analysis. A certified organic grade is available.
Nustras supplies xylitol in bulk commercial quantities, in food-grade bags and fibre drums, to manufacturers and formulators internationally, with a certificate of analysis, specification sheet and country-of-origin documentation on every lot. Xylitol is an approved sweetener and food additive in major markets; buyers confirm the permitted use, labelling requirements and level for their application.
