Sodium alginate is the sodium salt of alginic acid, a natural polysaccharide extracted from the cell walls of brown seaweeds such as Laminaria, Macrocystis and Ascophyllum species, supplied by Nustras as a food-grade milk-white powder used as a thickener, gelling agent, stabiliser and film-former. Alginic acid is a linear copolymer of mannuronic and guluronic acid residues; the sodium salt gives viscous aqueous solutions that gel with calcium ions.
It is formulated into dairy desserts, sauces, bakery fillings, restructured foods, beverages and ice cream; into capsules, tablets and powdered blends as a binder and soluble fibre ingredient; and into pharmaceutical and cosmetic preparations as a thickening and film-forming excipient.
The material is a milk-white powder. Assay, viscosity, pH and loss on drying are standardised to specification; identity is confirmed by the compendial identification tests for sodium alginate, and heavy-metal and microbial limits are supplied to specification and confirmed on each lot's certificate of analysis.
Nustras supplies sodium alginate in bulk commercial quantities, in food-grade bags and fibre drums, to manufacturers and formulators internationally, with a certificate of analysis, specification sheet and country-of-origin documentation on every lot. Sodium alginate (E401) is an accepted food additive and supplement ingredient in major markets; buyers confirm the permitted use and level for their application.
