Saccharomyces boulardii

Saccharomyces boulardii is a non-pathogenic probiotic yeast strain originally isolated from lychee and mangosteen fruit by French scientist Henri Boulard in 1920. Though classified as a strain of Saccharomyces cerevisiae (baker’s yeast), S. boulardii behaves differently and survives gastrointestinal conditions better. It is widely used for preventing and treating diarrhea (including antibiotic-associated and traveler’s diarrhea), restoring gut flora balance, and managing irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and inflammatory bowel disease (IBD).
