Kelp (Algae)

Kelp is the common name for large brown seaweeds of cold coastal waters. The kelp Nustras supplies is Atlantic kelp, Ascophyllum nodosum, harvested in Canada, then dried and milled into a powder. It is a natural marine source of iodine and minerals, used as an algae ingredient in dietary supplements and functional foods.

Kelp powder is formulated into tablets, capsules and mineral blends, into vegetable and greens powders, functional foods, seasonings and snack products, and into animal feed and pet nutrition. Its alginate content also gives it thickening and binding properties.

Kelp is supplied as a powder, typically brown to greenish-brown, with a characteristic marine odour. There is no single CAS number for a whole seaweed. Each lot is standardised to specification; iodine content is confirmed by a validated titrimetric or ICP method, and heavy-metal (including arsenic) and microbial limits are supplied to specification and confirmed on each lot's certificate of analysis.
