Irish Moss

Irish Moss is the dried red seaweed Chondrus crispus, supplied by Nustras as a milled powder and as dried cut thallus, and a traditional source of carrageenan, the sulphated polysaccharide that gives the seaweed its gelling and thickening behaviour. It grows on rocky North Atlantic coasts.

It is formulated into capsules, tablets and powdered supplements, herbal and seaweed blends, plant-based foods and beverages as a natural thickener and gelling base, vegan desserts, pet foods and cosmetic masks and lotions.

The powder is tan to reddish-brown with a marine odour; the cut material is dried, irregular reddish-brown pieces. It is standardised to specification for moisture, ash and particle size; identity is confirmed by macroscopic and microscopic examination and thin-layer chromatography. Iodine and the heavy metals typical of seaweed, including arsenic, cadmium, lead and mercury, are reported, and heavy-metal and microbial limits are supplied to specification and confirmed on each lot's certificate of analysis.
