Rutin

Rutin is a flavonoid glycoside made up of quercetin bound to the disaccharide rutinose. It occurs in buckwheat, citrus peel and many other plants, and is produced commercially from the flower buds of Sophora japonica L. Nustras supplies rutin as a fine yellow-green powder in a pharmacopoeial (NF) grade, standardised to specification.

Rutin is formulated into capsules and tablets, into flavonoid and botanical blends, into functional foods and beverages, and into cosmetics and skin-care products. It is also used as a starting material for the manufacture of quercetin and of semi-synthetic flavonoid derivatives such as troxerutin.

The material is a fine yellow-green powder, practically insoluble in cold water and soluble in alkaline solutions. Rutin content is standardised to specification and determined by UV-VIS spectrophotometry, with identity confirmed by thin-layer chromatography; loss on drying, residue on ignition, residual solvents, heavy-metal and microbial limits are supplied to specification and confirmed on each lot's certificate of analysis.
