Astaxanthin is a red-orange xanthophyll carotenoid, the pigment that gives salmon, trout, shrimp and krill their colour. It occurs naturally in the microalga Haematococcus pluvialis and in certain yeasts, and is also produced synthetically. Nustras supplies astaxanthin as a standardised ingredient for supplements, aquaculture-feed pigmentation and colouring applications.
Astaxanthin is formulated into softgel capsules, oil blends, beadlets and powders for dietary supplements, into functional foods and beverages, into cosmetics, and into feed for salmon, trout, shrimp and ornamental fish, where it is used as a pigmenting agent.
The material is a dark red powder or viscous red oil depending on the grade, insoluble in water. CAS number 472-61-7, molecular formula C40H52O4, molecular weight 596.8. Identity and assay are confirmed by HPLC or UV-VIS spectrophotometry against the specification; source, carrier, residual solvents, peroxide value, heavy-metal and microbial limits are supplied to specification and confirmed on each lot's certificate of analysis.
Nustras supplies astaxanthin in bulk commercial quantities, in sealed light-protective packaging and drums, to manufacturers and formulators internationally, with a certificate of analysis, specification sheet and country-of-origin documentation on every lot. The regulatory status of astaxanthin differs by source and market; buyers confirm the permitted source, level and claim for their application.
