1,3-Propanediol

1,3-Propanediol (PDO, propane-1,3-diol) is a three-carbon diol with hydroxyl groups on the terminal carbons, supplied by Nustras as a clear, colourless, low-odour liquid for use in cosmetic, personal-care and industrial chemical applications. It is a glycol with properties similar to propylene glycol and is used as a humectant, solvent and viscosity modifier, and as a monomer in polyester manufacture.

It is formulated into skin-care, hair-care and oral-care products as a humectant, solvent for actives and fragrance, and preservative-system booster; into polymers and resins, notably polytrimethylene terephthalate (PTT) fibres; and into heat-transfer fluids, lubricants, coatings and other industrial formulations.

The material is a clear, colourless, viscous liquid, miscible with water and ethanol. CAS number 504-63-2, molecular formula C3H8O2, molecular weight 76.09. Purity is standardised to specification and determined by gas chromatography; identity is confirmed by infrared spectroscopy and refractive index, and water content and heavy-metal limits are supplied to specification and confirmed on each lot's certificate of analysis.
