Wild Yam

Wild yam is the dried rhizome and root of Dioscorea villosa, a twining perennial vine of the Dioscoreaceae family native to eastern North America. The root contains steroidal saponins, chiefly dioscin, which on hydrolysis yields the sapogenin diosgenin, together with starch and tannins.
