Sweet Clover

Sweet clover is the dried flowering aerial part of Melilotus officinalis, a biennial legume, supplied by Nustras as a cut dried herb and as a milled powder. The herb is characterised by its coumarin content, which gives it a sweet, hay-like scent on drying, together with flavonoids, saponins and tannins.

Sweet clover is formulated into herbal teas and infusion blends, botanical supplements in capsule and tablet form, liquid herbal extracts and tinctures, and cosmetic and personal-care products.

The material is cut greenish stems, leaves and small yellow flowers, or a greenish-brown powder, with a characteristic sweet coumarin odour. Cut size and moisture are standardised to specification; botanical identity is confirmed by macroscopic and microscopic examination and HPTLC, with a grade available to the European Pharmacopoeia monograph for melilot.
