Saw Palmetto

Saw palmetto is the dried ripe fruit (berry) of Serenoa repens, a small fan palm native to the southeastern United States, supplied by Nustras as dried whole berries and as a milled berry powder. The fruit contains a lipid fraction of free fatty acids and their ethyl esters, together with phytosterols such as beta-sitosterol, flavonoids and polysaccharides.

Saw palmetto is formulated into botanical supplements in capsule, softgel and tablet form, herbal combination products, liquid herbal extracts and tinctures, and herbal tea blends.

The material is dark brown to black wrinkled berries or a brown powder with a characteristic odour and an acrid taste. Cut size and moisture are standardised to specification; botanical identity is confirmed by macroscopic and microscopic examination and HPTLC, and total fatty acid content by GC where a standardised grade is ordered. Heavy-metal and microbial limits are supplied to specification and confirmed on each lot's certificate of analysis.
