Saffron

Saffron is the dried stigma of the flower of Crocus sativus, an autumn-flowering crocus and one of the oldest spices and colourants in trade. Nustras supplies it as a water/ethanol extract, an orange-yellow fine powder standardised to the volatile marker safranal; its colour comes from the carotenoid glycosides crocin and crocetin and its bitter taste from picrocrocin.

The extract is formulated into botanical supplements in capsule, tablet and powder form, into functional beverages and teas, and into foods and cosmetics where a standardised saffron extract or a natural orange-yellow colour is required.

The material is an orange-yellow fine powder of Chinese origin with the characteristic odour of saffron, standardised to not less than 0.3 % safranal by UV and milled to pass 80 mesh. Identity is confirmed by Ph.Eur. methods, and heavy-metal and microbial limits are supplied to specification and confirmed on each lot's certificate of analysis.
