Quassia Amara

Category: Botanicals

Quassia amara, known as bitterwood or Surinam quassia, is a small tree of tropical Central and South America whose wood and bark contain intensely bitter quassinoid compounds, principally quassin and neoquassin. Nustras supplies Quassia amara as an extract of the wood in powder form, used as a bittering agent and botanical ingredient in the food, beverage and supplement sectors.

The extract is formulated into bitters, aperitif and tonic beverages, and flavour preparations where a natural bitter note is required, into botanical supplements in capsule and liquid form, and into traditional herbal preparations.

The material is a powdered extract of Quassia amara wood, typically light yellow to tan in colour, with an intensely bitter taste. Bitterness value and total quassinoids are standardised to specification and determined by HPLC; loss on drying and ash are standardised to specification, and heavy-metal and microbial limits are supplied to specification and confirmed on each lot's certificate of analysis.

Nustras supplies Quassia amara extract in bulk commercial quantities, in sealed packaging and fibre drums, to manufacturers and formulators internationally, with a certificate of analysis, specification sheet and country-of-origin documentation on every lot. Quassia is an accepted natural flavouring and botanical ingredient in major markets; buyers confirm the permitted level and claim for their application.
