Garcinia

Garcinia is the dried fruit rind of Garcinia gummi-gutta (commonly traded as Garcinia cambogia, or Malabar tamarind), a tropical tree of the mangosteen family native to south-west India and south-east Asia, supplied by Nustras as a rind powder and as extract powder standardised to hydroxycitric acid, and used as a botanical ingredient in supplements and functional foods. The rind contains (-)-hydroxycitric acid (HCA), an organic acid related to citric acid, which is the marker compound to which extracts are standardised, usually as a calcium, potassium or calcium-potassium salt.

It is formulated into botanical and weight-management category supplements in capsule, tablet, powder and gummy form, into sports-nutrition and functional beverage powders, and into botanical blends. The rind is also a traditional souring ingredient in south Indian cooking.

The material is a light brown to off-white powder with a sour taste; extract grades are paler. Botanical identity, part used (fruit rind), moisture, particle size and, for extract grades, extract ratio and hydroxycitric acid content are standardised to specification; identity and HCA assay are confirmed by HPLC against a reference standard, and heavy-metal, pesticide and microbial limits are supplied to specification and confirmed on each lot's certificate of analysis.
