Coptis

Coptis is the dried rhizome of Coptis chinensis (Chinese goldthread, huang lian in Chinese pharmacopoeial usage), a small perennial herb of the buttercup family, supplied by Nustras as a ground rhizome powder and as extract powder, and used as a botanical ingredient in herbal supplements and traditional-herbal formulations. The rhizome is bright yellow inside because of its isoquinoline alkaloids, chiefly berberine, together with coptisine, palmatine and related compounds.

It is formulated into herbal supplements in capsule, tablet and powder form, into traditional Chinese herbal formulations and granules, into botanical blends and tinctures, and into cosmetic and oral-care products where yellow alkaloid-bearing botanicals are used.

The material is a yellow to yellowish-brown powder with a strongly bitter taste. Botanical identity, part used (rhizome), moisture, particle size and, for extract grades, extract ratio and total alkaloid or berberine content are standardised to specification; identity is confirmed by HPTLC or HPLC fingerprint against a reference standard, and heavy-metal, pesticide and microbial limits are supplied to specification and confirmed on each lot's certificate of analysis.
