Cascara Sagrada is a medicinal herb derived from the dried bark of the Rhamnus purshiana tree, native to North America. The bark contains anthraquinone compounds (especially cascarosides) which stimulate peristalsis (contractions of the colon), aiding in bowel movements. It is traditionally used as a natural laxative, and its name means “sacred bark” in Spanish.
