Cape Aloe

Cape aloe, Aloe ferox, is a succulent native to southern Africa, harvested for its leaf; the bitter leaf exudate contains anthraquinone glycosides, chiefly aloin. The dried exudate is a dark brown to black brittle material with a strongly bitter taste; the whole-leaf powder is light brown to greenish and the extract a brown powder. Identity is confirmed by macroscopic and microscopic examination or by HPTLC against a reference, with aloin content standardised to specification by HPLC. Heavy-metal and microbial limits are supplied to specification and confirmed on each lot's certificate of analysis.
