Agrocybe Aegerita (Mushroom)

Agrocybe aegerita, known as the black poplar mushroom or pioppino (and now also classified as Cyclocybe aegerita), is an edible cultivated mushroom, supplied by Nustras as a dried fruiting-body powder and as extract powder, and used as a mushroom ingredient in supplements and functional foods. It is a wood-decomposing fungus that grows on poplar and other hardwoods and is cultivated commercially in Asia and Europe; like other edible mushrooms, its cell walls are rich in polysaccharides, including beta-glucans.

It is formulated into mushroom supplements and multi-mushroom blends in capsule, tablet and powder form, into functional beverages, broths, soups and seasoning powders, into nutrition bars and snacks, and into pet-food formulations where mushroom powders are used.

The material is a light brown to brown powder with a characteristic mushroom odour. Species identity, part used (fruiting body), moisture, particle size and, for extract grades, extract ratio or polysaccharide and beta-glucan content are standardised to specification; identity is confirmed by macroscopic, microscopic or DNA-based methods, and heavy-metal, pesticide and microbial limits are supplied to specification and confirmed on each lot's certificate of analysis.
